THE TREE bears the same fruit, after all.

For retired doctor Vicente J.A. Rosales, Sr. and his son Vicente “Bambi” Rosales, Jr., the old saying aptly describes their identical, if not interwoven destinies, from leading the country’s oldest university student publication during their heyday to becoming successful medical practitioners.

Both of them say that joining the Varsitarian was driven by their love for writing.

“I have always been writing so it was only natural that I joined the Varsitarian,” says father Vicente, who entered the Varsitarian in 1949 as a reporter.

He served as news editor from 1950 to 1952 before becoming editor in chief from 1952 to 1955. But because of heavy academic workload in his third year and internship in medical school, he stepped down, becoming senior associate editor in 1953 to 1954 and 1955 to 1956.

Bambi’s his five-year stint with the V was not exactly a product of his father’s prodding.

“Although my father was proud that I became part of the campus publication, he did not push me to join,” he says.

Despite expressing more interest in writing during his high school days, Bambi took up a science-related course in college in preparation for his medical studies.

“My father told me that if I took up medicine, I could still write and practice my profession. But if I took up journalism, I could write but I won’t be able to practice medicine,” he recalls.

In 1979, Bambi joined the Varsitarian where he became assistant Features editor while studying Zoology at the College of Science.

He was then promoted as Features editor in 1980 and later, as a member of the Editorial Board.

He became the Varsitarian’s editor in chief from 1982 to 1984.

“I was very happy when my son became the Varsitarian’s editor in chief because he superseded my two-year term (as editor in chief),” the father says.

Father and son eventually came back to the Varsitarian and served a pair of two-year terms as publications advisers. The elder Rosales held the post from 1962 to 1964, while his son took over from 1995 to 1997.

Their medical careers flourished as well. Vicente, who topped the medical licensure examinations in 1956 and taught Medicine and Bioethics in the University in 1979, became president of the Philippine Medical Association from 1983 to 1984 and later the chair of the governing board of the Institute for Reproductive Health Philippines in 2004.

At present, the younger Rosales is an associate professor at the Medicine Faculty’s Department of Anatomy and Department of Neurology and Psychiatry. V Alena Pias P. Bantolo
